Engineers without Borders
Steve Elliott, Act with Genius
Engineers without Borders is an organization devoted to using the skills of its members to improve the quality of life in villages and towns throughout the world.
There are several student chapters throughout the world that let junior college students tackle a specific problem (such as drilling a well, sanitation facilities, filtering river water, installing small hydro plants, or whatever a village requests) with the mentoring oversight of a licensed engineer. During their junior year a team might design and build a prototype of the solution. Then, in their senior year, as a class project, the team will visit the site and install the solution and make it work.
If you want to see solutions in action, check out the projects on their website at: http://www.ewb-usa.org
