The Fisher Institute for Medical Research was founded in 1977 through the joint efforts of Sir Anthony Fisher of London, England along with a group of prominent Texas business and professional leaders. Principal funding was provided by a local matched-funds formula with the Institute for Economic Affairs of London Foundation. Sir Anthony Fisher decided to establish a source of funds to support academic research. He established research institutes in Europe, Canada, South America, and the United States. Sherrill Edwards became the Founding Executive Director of the local Fisher Institute.
At the suggestion of Helen Foytik, Mr. Edwards made the request that medical research and education become the focus of the Institute and that guidance of the Institute be vested with H. R. McDaniel, M.D. as Medical Director. Dr. McDaniel served as Medical Director from 1981 to 1996, when he became Medical Director for Mannatech, Inc. He was succeeded as Medical Director at The Fisher Institute by his wife, Candace Freeman McDaniel, D.O., EdD. Governance of the Institute is vested with an independent Board of financial, tax, and legal advisors committed to responsible stewardship of the Institutes financial affairs.
