This book introduced me to some ideas of great value to explorers. The author, Mary Shideler, was a dear friend and companion in the quest to see the future of the world as one in which human integrity of spirit thrived and produced good effects. The book is out of print, but good used copies have been seen on the net.
There was a certain kindly fierceness about Mary that delighted me. Perhaps that trait explains her choice of title for this book of autobiographical intellectual history. -leif
On the title page of the book the following appears:
To me also was given, if not Victory, yet the consciousness of Battle, and the resolve to persevere therein while life or faculty is left. Thomas Carlyle, Sartor Resartus
