  | Macfarlane in Riddle of the Modern World makes the point that the intellectual progression from Montesquieu -> Smith -> Tocqueville -> Maitland was fundamentally on the right track; Marx created a huge diversion not only in economics but even more impotant in anthropology and history. One upshot of this was that the American founders,being steeped in Montesquieu and in some cases familiar with Smith, were building on a far sounder foundation than many who came afterwards. The other is that we really must go back to these roots and re-create the path forward from that branching.
